TOP SECRET!

B u d a p e s t, December 1981

Subject: (Assessment) report in the confidential investigation codenamed “Painter”

R E P O R T

In order to prevent and obstruct the hostile activity of the target person and his close associates as well as to restrict the number of his undesired Western contacts, we initiated the definitive withholding of 650 propaganda materials and hostile materials sent from abroad. In some cases we proposed the differentiated delay of materials.

It has been established that György Galántai keeps pursuing his activity aimed at loosening the party’s cultural policy. He has been more intensely operating and expanding his Art Pool archives, which he founded without the permission of the authorities. In the last six months he made thousands of new propaganda materials and sent them to his contacts. His domestic activity has also enlivened. In his calls he urges Hungarian ‘artists’ to pursue their activities in groups, while also propagating their participation in foreign actions.

It is recommended that the confidential investigation and operative technical regulation 3/a (tapping, interception) used to keep the target person under surveillance be extended until 31 December 1982.
